This is something I had to do, I don't know why, perhaps because I really loved Lost. This top 20 didn't take too long, but I did want to show respect to Lost by having at least 2 scenes from each season and to get every character involved. There may be some guys missed out but I really feel I've picked out all the most tearjerking segments we all remember. So please take time to watch the video links, because they deserve it. I'm sure any Lost fan here won't mind taking some time to look back on the greatest love story ever told.
20 - There's No Place Like Home - 412
This scene was long due. Not until the first of a 3 part finale in season 4 our survivors finally reach LA. The scene is very simple in it's storytelling. Plane lands, losties get off and meet their family. Giacchino's light theme and in classic lost way, slow-mo shots! (there will be alot of this). But for a normal expected scene in Lost it really reminds us how far the characters have come and how the makers know that such a simple scene will mean so much to the audience. The reason I put this scene at 20 is just because there will be more plane scenes to come!
19 - Dead Is Dead - 512
Now, although this scene is no different to any other couple moment I felt Ben deserves some acknowledgement (but only once) as him being such a dark and evil person it was lovely to see Ben broken and really show some humanity and general redemption. Many fans weren't too excited for Alex, however without this scene we would never let Ben be part of the lostie crew.
18 - Ab Aeterno - 609
Here, half way through season 6 we FINALLY learn about Richards past. The writers knew this story had to be told, had to tell it in one episode, answer a ton of questions and not loose the sentimental touch expected in all flashback stories…and they nailed it. Were introduced to Isabella, Richards love interest and like Ben the audience have never experienced a sensitive side to Richard and in one much needed scene we get Richard heartbroken (a trait for losties) in a touching moment that has nothing to do with the current affairs of the season, yet you are still engaged.
17 - Walkabout - 104
It’s time to bring back where we started. This scene is the forth episode and we have learn’t very little of the characters, especially Locke. What we do know is he seems confident, unflawed and the very guy you want on a deserted island, o how wrong we were. This scene isn't emotional for the love or heartbreak narrative which you'll usually find, it’s sad because it’s SAD (the guy’s in a frackin' wheelchair), there is such desperation and clear vulnerability in the character which inter-cuts with the new start on the island. The writers will do this a lot, mix sadness with happiness, your emotions are everywhere, either way, tears will show. We also get Locke catchphrase!
16 - Not In Portland - 307
I have to admit this clip didn't make the top twenty cut originally, but I really needed to give season 3 a bit more attention. Also I’ve not got any Kate scenes, we need Kate! Why I picked this out of any other episode is when season 3 was during airing us fans were a little frustrated as not much was happening and we weren't sure if Jack and Kate would still be happening, then Kate just tells a story so perfectly, just how we remembered, she put us in her place and gave us the little bit of hope ‘don’t give up on us just yet fans… Trust us'.
15 - The Candidate - 614
OK, I kinda didn’t want this part in the countdown, mainly because there’s a handful of Sun and Jin moments already, but also because we all saw this coming a mile away and the heart can only handle so much! These two lovebirds have been separated by land, sea and time and when they are finally together…they die, of course. But I think the scene does what it needs to, the makers need this to happen quick to maintain suspense but know it has to be super sad, its Sun and Jin ffs! The usual ingredients are in place, all they need to make it work is our history with these two. Dam I cried.
14 - Man Of Science, Man Of Faith - 201
I wanted some off Island clips on this countdown as well as clips from every season. I picked this out the bunch because this scene always surprised me. After the ending of the first season we were excited for season 2 to start, considering how 1 ended, and the episode was full of mystery. So the writers remind us that Lost isn't all about mystery. We have Jack, and with Jack comes emotion and intensity, right from the start. The writers jokingly had Jack claim that he’s intense. Nicely done.
13 - Do No Harm - 120
This scene wasn’t in my first draft. I felt I had too much from season 1, but season 1 is the best season. Fact. Also I wanted to give other characters a chance here, and this scene, like most goes from happy to sad in a cut and lets me tick off 4 characters, from Claire and her new born Aaron to Shannon and her lost brother, Boone. This may be the first of scene of the show with no sound…just Giacchino because that’s all you need. What I love about this scene too is many sad moment in Lost is classicly follow with a ‘OOOO!’
12 - LaFleur - 508
As a Lost fan it would be a disgrace not to give Sawyer a moment. Well I’ve giving him 2. In this part I had to show his love to freckles. I was going to use the scene where they meet again after 3 years apart, but then I kept remembering the scene before when Sawyer explains love lost. Anyone who has been heart broke will know that it really does take three years to get over someone and this clip just brings all heartbroken together. A very short scene, no names are used, no montages, just our Sawyer putting things in prospective like he always does. Beautiful.
11 - The Lie - 502
Another short scene and fantasticly captured. We have grown to love Hurley and any scene he shares with his mother. So why not bring it in. Any time Hurley cries, I cry, he is just a loveable, kind person. And although this bit has great humour it turns sad in seconds. This was the second episode of the fifth season and was obviously done to clarify things to crappy uncommitted viewers. So the writers never miss a chance to remind the audiences that this show is not about mystery, tears are expected and if you don’t feel anything in 90 seconds of Lost, stop now.
10 - LA X - 601
So here we are on the top ten. Pat yourself on the back. As I mentioned early here’s another plane scene. This time 815 never crashed! And lands in LAX! And all the characters we've watched over the last 6 years never met each other! All those experiences and love stories will never be fulfilled! And this simple scene of a plane landed and all passengers getting off and so captivating on so many levels! So little is shown yet so much is seen. Usual Giacchino, usual slow-mo, the idea of what if they never crashed…that idea is more heartbreaking then all the heartbreak in the show. I believe the writers put this scene in to say ‘is this REALLY how you want the series to end?’
9 - Ji Yeon - 407
I can’t go too long without bringing back Sun and Jin, again I considered the scene where Jin ‘dies’, though the scene has to maintain an intensity and we are more shocked than sadden there, but by that point we are led to believe he will die so I guess we had our feelings shield up. This scene happens episodes before, we don’t know what is going on (but when do we) as the makers trick us with a flashforward laced with a flashback narrative. But once the dust settles in this episode were left with our shields well and truly down. Here’s the tissue.. and ennnd scene.
8 - Exodus - 123
I told you there would be more Sawyer, and I got him with his shirt off. I was hesitant to put this part in because I’ve already got a scene from the same episode coming up. However this scene showed the first of ‘bits coming together’ and of course was between the two alphas. I love this scene, Jack getting the closure he needed from someone he kinda hated, and trying he best not to cry. Sawyer being kind and sincere and doing good. This scene showed that even the big boys cry and if some viewers still can’t shead a tear, then you will never appriacte this show.
7 - All The Best Cowboys Have Daddy Issues - 111
More from season 1, and quite right. While we still are little history between the characters we always find ourselves tightly drawn to them, perhaps it’s because the characters have extreme vulnerability this soon after the crash or maybe due to their flaws. Nonetheless this scene made me realize how much I care about the characters and also how much they care for each other and how well the writers know this. Dam Jack is relentless. Sorry for the crappy quality of video, it’s the best I could find.
6 - The Constant - 405
He we are, finally a Dez and Penny scene. I could of used so many of these moments, when they meet, when they meet…again, when he reads a letter from her, when she finds him in the raft and so on. But this scene was a great slow down after a fast and confusing 35 minutes and in some ways this was the beginning of the end. This is what we love, lost people reconnected, it would make a great BT ad!
5 - Collision - 208
There is still time for one more Sun and Jin moment. Now this point was very anticipated, this couple had been separated for almost 10 episodes, over 2 seasons. The makers knew this time would come and kept obvious Lost traits knowing that however they do it, we will love it. No use for sound or dialogue, just let it play out. Also I managed to get Rose and Bernard, Sayid and a dead Shannon, Jack and Ana Lucia all giving us a extra tear to spare.
4 - Through The Looking Glass - 323
Anyone who has got this far is expecting this scene. In fact this moment is many fans favourite. I cant explain what makes this scene so powerful, we all knew Charlie was going to die from the start of season 3, but we didn’t want it to happen. Like most finales someone dies and in the midst of excitement and confusition and more questions being raised, the makers pull back and give us what was to come. Also this was the first death where a lostie sacrifices himself, a trait which becomes significant on Lost, to save his friends and love, Claire. Throwing I a final message which sets up the next season. Well done Charlie, you were missed.
3 - Exodus - 125
A great ending to a great episode to a great season to a great show and as expected another scene of a plane. I loved this moment, it was times like this that brings lost home and just steps back from the chaos to summarise the whole season, from where it all began, to where it is to where it’s going. Everything that has been shared and experienced, all the sadness, joy and all the flashbacks of each character falls into place. Each character is giving a moment, clueless to outcome of this flight, there is such innocence and hopelessness here and it just blew my mind away. Love it.
2 - Exodus - 123
Now I really wanted this scene as number one, it has continued to be my favourite scene even after all those seasons, however I felt I’ve giving season 1 a lot of attention in this countdown and therefore number two was only fair to the other seasons. The reason I love this scene is because it isn't ‘sad’, it’s actually very exciting and full of hope and happiness. These poor guys have had it hard on and off the Island, people dying, a monster in the jungle, creepy natives who kidnap pregnant woman, a mad woman running around and a lot of personality clashes. Also we all wanted a raft part of the story, this is what any of us would do and…I can’t explain the joy I had here, it is just utterly beautiful with Vincent paddling out! Gold. As the kids would say, it’s epic win. Ps; Giacchino rules, seriously.
1 - The End - 618
So you made it to number 1. Ok, many fans would disagree with me as this scene being number 1. But I cried more here than any other time in all Lost history. It was the end. It was over. Make the most because this is it. After 80 minutes of action and constant heart string pulling the writer ended the show EXACTLY how I wanted. A long slow-mo montage of all the characters, after 6 years, together, hugging, kissing, just content with Giacchino swelling away. Cheesey as fuck, I love it. It just doesn't stop here, tear-jerking moment one after another, they just continually remind us of the last 6 years we faithfully watched the show, though thick and thin. The writers know anyone who made it this far deserves this, and they don’t hold back, it just goes on and is more beautiful every time I watch it (and to add Vincent at the last second, classic). Lost has always been a character based show, it’s a love story, not a mystery show. It always tells us that we are curious, we are intelligent, we are tempered, but most of all we are human and can love.
Thank you Lost.
